All these ideas and more were shared with 500 teachers, administrators and district personnel at the 2013 San Joaquin County Office of Education Common Core State Standards Summer Institute.
This coming school year (2013-2014), California schools are transitioning between the old State Standards to the new Common Core Standards (which have been adopted by 45 states, the District of Columbia, four territories and the Department of Defense Education Activity nationwide). And teachers, administrators and districts are looking for ways to get ready.
What’s exciting about the new Common Core State Standards is that it allows learning to be much more than knowing the answer to a multiple-choice question. Students will be required to problem-solve, reason and think for themselves. Teachers will find themselves less the “sage on the stage” and more the “guide on the side.” Depth of Knowledge will be the goal as we ask students to design, connect, synthesize, critique, analyze, create, prove and apply concepts to show their proficiency of the standards.
Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), within schools and districts as well as online, will be vital as teachers search for ideas and strategies to implement these new standards. Make Teacher Geek is Chic! part of your PLC. Check this website for ideas, websites and apps to help you and your students successfully reach these new Common Core State Standards.
We’ve got to depend on each other to get us excited and ready for the new standards. Remember: we’re all in this together!
